Seagate IronWolf vs IronWolf Pro: Same Name, Different Animals

Compatibility data on this site last refreshed 2026-10-29 · reading time ~3 min

Both IronWolf tiers are CMR and both are heavily represented on Synology's compatibility list. The differences are workload rating, speed and warranty — and whether your build can use them.

IronWolf (non-Pro)

5400-7200rpm by capacity, 180TB/year workload rating, 3-year warranty, built for 1-8 bay NAS. For a home Synology streaming Plex and backing up laptops, this is plenty of drive. On Synology's HCL, non-Pro IronWolf part numbers cover the widest model range of any third-party series.

IronWolf Pro

7200rpm at every capacity, 550TB/year workload, 5-year warranty, rated for up to 24-bay enclosures, and larger cache. In practice: faster sustained writes, faster RAID rebuilds, more headroom for scrubbing-heavy schedules and multi-user DSM services.

How to decide

Quick answers

Are both IronWolf tiers CMR?

Yes — CMR across both, unlike WD's non-Plus Red line.

Can I mix IronWolf and IronWolf Pro in one array?

You can, but the array follows the slowest drive per stripe. For consistent rebuild behavior, prefer one tier.
